unwanted occupant

I was pulling weeds from my veggie garden yesterday and noticed something was moving on my tomato plant. I took a close look and realized that a huge caterpillar was living on my tomato plant.

At first I thought oh, this is cool and I was showing it to my daughter and her friends. The kids really enjoyed observing this creature.

Anyway, I wanted to know more about this caterpillar, so I read about it online. It turns out that this particular caterpillar is a pest! It is called a hornworm and it doesn't even turn into a beautiful butterfly. Eventually, this hornworm turns into a huge ugly moth!!!! They usually attack tomato plants and some other plants. I do not want to use any pest control chemicals on my veggies, so I basically pulled this caterpillar out of my garden and put him down at near by park. My husband thought that I should kill him, but I just could not do it. I hope that he can survive out in the open field eating some weeds....lol

This hornworm turned out to be a pest, but at least my daughter, her friends and I leaned something new. It was a good educational session for all of us
